Overall objectives of the inclusive learning resource
Inclusive learning intervention logic: (What are the overall broader objectives to which the action will contribute?)
The project aimed for a technological solution to involve children who have long-term illness very closely in the learning process of their own class. All children and young people, regardless of their mother tongue, cultural or social background, should be given the opportunity to receive education.
Objectively verifiable indicators of achievement: (What are the key indicators related to the overall objectives?)
Project has been used and still in use in schools and education centers by the support of Flemish Government. On average, Bednet receives an 8/10 for each of the results that children have achieved through Bednet. A small 5% of users give an insufficient. On average Bednet scores well for every level of education. Secondary education scores on average slightly lower than primary education (pre-primary and lower).
Sources and means of verification: (What are the sources of information for these indicators?)
Bednet was established in 2002 as an innovation project in the city of Antwerp.
Bednet started in March 2007 with 15 children who tested a prototype. This prototype was developed in the context of the ASCIT research project of IMEC (then Iminds: Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology). ASCIT stands for 'Again at my School by Fostering Communication through Interactive Technologies for long term sick children'. The project aimed for a technological solution to involve children who have long-term illness very closely in the learning process of their own class.
The research project was initiated at the request of the Flemish Patient Platform and ran from 1 September 2005 to 31 December 2007, with a follow-up process of 1 year.
4 companies participated, 3 institutions and 6 research partners. From this research a first prototype of software was made to connect and engage children between the ages of 8 and 12 with their class via the internet. After completing this research project, the system was optimized and adapted to the needs of the child and the class. Since 1 September 2014, Bednet has introduced a new system to meet the new needs in classes. Work is underway in 2017 to renew this system for the 2017-2018 school year.
Risks and Challenges:
Specific purpose of the inclusive learning resource
Inclusive learning intervention logic: (What specific objective is the resource intended to achieve to contribute to the overall objectives?)
Bednet projects are started for students who are temporarily, long-term or regularly absent due to illness, accident or maternity leave. And this always based on the needs of the child. Bednet provides the IT platform and hardware (eg computer, webcam, headset, scanner / printer, etc.) as well as the supervision of the entire project.
Objectively verifiable indicators of achievement: (Which indicators clearly show that the objective of the actions/resource has been achieved?)
Sources and means of verification: (What are the sources of information that exist or can be collected? What are the methods required to get this information?)
Bednet project has revolved around 5 core values: Innovative, Transparent, Committed, Binding and most importantly Child Oriented system for vulnerable students.
Risks and Challenges: (Which factors and conditions outside the user's responsibility are necessary to achieve that objective? (external conditions)) Which risks should be taken into consideration?
Expected results on implementation of the resource
Inclusive learning intervention logic: (The results are the outputs envisaged to upscale. What are the expected results?)
Project is aiming to help children who has long term treatment process or who needs to follow courses at their home. With Bednet system, it is expected to bring alternative way for students to catch up their courses even if they are absent in the classroom.
Objectively verifiable indicators of achievement: (What are the indicators to measure whether and to what extent the action/resource achieves the expected results?)
Since the start of the non-profit organization, Bednet has been deployed 2,588 times in 1,255 Flemish schools in Flanders and Brussels, in all networks and all educational directions. Due to the fact that Flemish Government has significantly expanded the subsidy for the project.
Sources and means of verification: (What are the available sources of information for these indicators?)
Risks and Challenges: (What external conditions must be met to obtain the expected results on schedule?)
Students should follow all the courses and practice perpetually.
Activities
Inclusive learning intervention logic: (What are the key activities to be carried out and in what sequence in order to reach the expected results?)
Since September 2016, synchronous education has been possible from 4 lessons (or 36 half-days) of use.
Objectively verifiable indicators of achievement: (What are the means required to implement these activities, e.g. personnel, equipment, training, studies, supplies, operational facilities, etc.)
Bednet offers its services completely free of charge for the child and the school concerned. Over the years it has always appealed to companies and individuals to support this unique project.
Sources and means of verification: (What are the sources of information about action progress?)
Risks and Challenges: (What pre-conditions are required before the use of the resource starts? What conditions outside the user's direct control have to be met for the implementation of the planned activities?)
Prospective users needs to apply CLB in order to complete the all procedure. There are legal procedures in order to get this source for free.
