Description of good practice:
New Bulgarian University (NBU) is open to students with special educational needs. Over the years, comprehensive conditions have been created to facilitate the access of students with physical disabilities to university resources. A panoramic elevator has been built, which, besides being very interesting architecturally and breathing new life into the building, it allows people with mobility impairments to make full use of the space and resources of university five floors. There are also four ramps that provide access to the coffee club, the hall, the toilets and the elevator. Part of the accessible environment are the installed automatic doors, thus all entrances are tailored to the access of people with impaired motor functions. The university entrances are also marked with Braille signs. Special parking places are also available. The library is also accessible furthermore a special place for people with disabilities is available. There is a noise-proof cabin for students with visual impairments with specialized equipment and software. It has Windows screen reader software that tells the computer which part of the screen is in focus and what is depicted on it. The Bulgarian Association for computer linguistics donated for free use speech synthesizer for Bulgarian language - Speech Lab 2.0. The other required program that is installed for use is Fine reader. Braille printer is also available. As part of another internal university project, staff members were trained to support students with disabilities. The training has included 5 training courses: • Neurological diseases and motor limitations; • "Approaches in communication with students with mental health problems"; • "Dyslexia" • "Specific means and strategies for communication with the deaf and hard of hearing students" • "Bulgarian Sign Language" All these adjustments were made in order to facilitate the education process of SEN students as well as to make the teaching process more inclusive.
